Bahgarah is the name of a locality in the district of Darrang('Darrang' is a district of Asom, in India). The name has come from the word "Bah" meaning bamboo and "Gar" meaning fort.

It consists of around seven villages inhabited by both Hindus and Muslims. The Hindus and the Muslims are known to be very peace loving and they have been living in harmony since time immemorial. The Muslims living here are believed to being Hindus who have been converted to Islam by some devoted Muslim preachers who had come to this place from Bengal.

Many people believe that the Muslims living here and in the adjoining areas of Dumuni Chowki are the descendants of two lady who were converted to Islam by the preachers. As a matter of fact the customs and the heritage of these Muslims are same as that of the Hindus living here. This is very evident from the fact that both the Hindu and the Muslim women do not eat food before their husband has a partake of the food. And when food is served in the household the first serving is always on the husband's plate or on the head of the family.

This is the reason why this place is famous.

Again this place has a rich cultural and historical background too. It is said that in the battle of Saraighat when Ram Singh was coming in this direction the people of this locality built a fench of bamboo to ward of the enemy. And it is said that when Ram Singh attacked this place with 200 horsemen he could not enter the village because of the bamboo fench-such was the strength of the fench. Eventually, the name of the village got the name "Bahgarah".

This region has produced many well known personalities who have brought name and fame to this place. Prominent among them is the former head of the department of Neurology of the Guwahati Medical college(GMC).}
