Though the picture is subject to copyright I believe it is covered by the U.S. fair use laws because:

  1. No free alternative can exist given that this self-portrait of the comic strip creator is subject to trademark law and thus protected;
  2. The image has been released to the public through its placement on a freely accessible website for promotional purposes by the copyright holders;
  3. The image is described in a critical manner within the article.
