The O-zone Layer

The O-zone layer is a layer in the stratosphere which protects us from UV (ultra violet) rays (the stratosphere is a layer of the earth’s atmosphere, it has warm layers higher up and cooler areas further down).These rays come from space, mainly the sun. The O-zone layer is just like a big layer of sun block. If we are exposed to the UV rays, it could develop cancers and their skin ages more quickly. The O-zone layer is in danger of disappearing because of pollution in the air. This pollution can be caused by things such as aerosols and cars. If we cut back on the amount of aerosols we use and if we walked more often we might still have hope for the future. If we keep polluting the air, in about 50 years time, we will burn alive. You could say that in 50 years the earth will be a ball of flames. The o-zone layer became popular in 1984 when scientists discovered a hole in the layer just above Antarctica. This hole wasn’t expected and set scientists on a search to discover why the hole had appeared and what had caused it. In 1987, scientists discovered that the hole above the Antarctica is about the same size the USA. Some adults say that they don’t care if the world burns up in 50 years because they won’t live that long. But maybe they should think some more because maybe they won’t be alive then, but their children will. Those people are basically saying that they don’t mind if their children die. If everyone knew the danger they are in, maybe they would do something about it and save the earth from burning up.
