The primary component, b Velorum A, is a yellow-white F-type supergiant with a mean apparent magnitude of +3.77. It is classified as an irregular variable star and its brightness varies from magnitude +3.77 to +3.91. It has a 10th magnitude companion, 37.5 arcseconds distant.
