[edit] Odd nickname

Isn't "shul" Yiddish? "Painted shul" would surely be an odd nickname for a Sephardi institution, no?--Pharos 21:16, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Syrian Jews in Brooklyn often go to the same schools as the Ashkenazim (Flatbush Yeshivah etc.) and have taken on a certain number of Yiddishisms from their neighbours, such as shul, daven, tachlis etc. Also, the fame of this synagogue seems to have spread beyond the Syrian community. --Sir Myles na Gopaleen (the da) 12:20, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
