Azzopardi
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Azzopardi is a Maltese surname derived from the hebrew A Safardi, which means a "A Jew coming from Spain". Most of the Azzopardi families in Malta originated in Toledo, Spain, which is right in the center of the country close to Madrid.[1]
Since 1492, the Azzopardis of Malta converted to Catholicism in following with the laws of the time, a few practised Judaism in secret, but this didn't last long and all eventually converted to Catholicism. Meaning that for over 500 years the Azzopardis are essentially a Catholic family, despite the origins of the name.[1]
