Colegio Cesar Chavez often served as a facility for community gatherings and celebrations. This picture, taken inside the main reception room at Colegio, depicts the celebration of the First Holy Communion of Andrew Olivo, son of Arthur Omar Olivo. Arthur Omar Olivo, who was also a teacher with Center for Employment Training [1] (an educational service for Chicano and Hispanic people), was the grounds keeper at Colegio from 1980 until 1982, when Colegio closed. Arthur Omar Olivo is seen seated against the window. Through the window behind Mr. Olivo one can see the "Art Building". Mr. Olivo and his family lived in the "Art Building" during his tenure as grounds keeper.

Also pictured in the cowboy hat is Max Sanchez, who was the head costodian at the colegio. Pictured from left to right at the end of the table is Romelia Sanchez, Felipe Sanchez and George Anthony Sanchez who are the wife and sons of Max Sanchez. The Sanchez family still live in Mt. Angel. Max and Felipe Sanchez have since passed away. My memories of the hours I spent talking with my father as we maintain the floors of the colegio, while the history and the legacy of Colegio Cesar Chavez was being written remain in my heart and in my soul. I was only a teenager, but watching the talent and the dedication of the faculty and students that attended the Colegio helped mold my mind and the image of what I should be as a man. [Arturo Sanchez]

  • Arturo: What a surprise to find this picture here and to find your description of it. It was nice to read what you wrote. It's nice to see that some people remember Colegio. By the way, Arthur Olivo died in 2001. And Erma Gonzalez, who was the president of Colegio, recently died as well. Too bad. Andrew Olivo 19:16, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
