[edit] Summary

Addendum by a Shedd volunteer: Nickel was brought to the Shedd Aquarium in 2003. A physical showed that (a) a 1975 nickel was lodged in her esophagus, and needed removal, and (b) she was female. Thus, her former name of "Pete" was discarded, and she was renamed Nickel. Green Sea Turtles are an endangered species, but due to a motor boat gash in the rear of her carapace, Nickel is unable to return to the wild, and will continue her tenure at Shedd. The injury left Nickel unable to control her buoyancy well, and she swims with her rear flippers atypically high, as the above photo shows. She was born in the mid to late 1990s. More information on Nickel can be found here: [1]
