[edit] Comparable

In what sense are these awards "comparable"? The organizations seem to be quite disparate, with these awards simply being the "highest" award available through the organization. That doesn't seem like enough of a commonality to be of interest, and seems to be inherently a scout POV since nobody else would think of them this way. I suggest problems with notability (is this a topic on which anybody writes? "awards comparable to Eagle Scout"?), neutral point of view (a purely Scouting perspective), and original research (according to what published sources are these awards "comparable"?)--Lquilter 20:07, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

I created this page because editors kept adding these awards to Eagle Scout (Boy Scouts of America), where, in my opinion it really had nothing to do with the subject. At one point, there was a list of about two pages long before we split it to this list and List of highest awards in Scouting. Personally, I've never figured out how the Billy Mitchell Award is like Eagle Scout, but the Air Force does consider Billy Mitchell comparable to Eagle Scout when considering for advanced promotion upon enlistment, as cited.
As another example, I've removed the Eagle Scout comment from Gold Award (Girl Scouts of the USA) and it keeps coming back. In my, opinion, each award should stand on its own merits, but others seem to disagree. I'm not saying that the other awards are inferior, just that they are different. Indeed, I think that elements of the Gold Award are harder than Eagle Scout. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 21:05, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
Ah, I see. A fix for another problem! <g> Still, do you think it would be reasonable to just edit those comments out of the Scouting pages (since they're not relevant), and delete this list? The highest awards in Scouting list seems quite useful, but this one, not so much. --Lquilter 21:24, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
I have no particular attachment to this article. I think we kicked this out when Eagle Scout went up for FA. I think the only edits other than mine have been to add the Gold Award, so I know those editors weren't actually reading the article. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 22:22, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
Well, I moved it to Category:Lists of awards. Why don't we leave this discussion up for a little bit and see if anyone else chimes in. If not, when I get to cleaning up Category:Lists of awards, I'll post it for AFD. --Lquilter 16:21, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
Works for me. I will post this on the Scouting notice board. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 16:53, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
  • This page should be part of a larger artilce on youth. --evrik (talk) 15:08, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
That is a good idea. Something like "List of awards in youth organizations"? There is List of prizes, medals, and awards, but it has little on non-Scouting youth awards. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 15:30, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
It would be great to have such an article. I've been developing some sub-lists that focus on the identity of the award-recipients -- I haven't done youth yet, but I set up a category for Category:Awards based on age of recipient. (There are some awards for seniors, and also young professionals / early career-type awards.) We also have Category:Student awards which is of course quite different but certainly the recipients overlap a good bit with the recipients of awards for youth.--Lquilter 18:22, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
Hmmm... Didn't know about the Student awards cat, I think I think the Young American Award would fit into it. If you want to develop or merge this, go for it. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 19:25, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
