"Avruga" is a registered trademark (according to the label on the jar) rather than a generic term. That said, it has become popular in the restaurant trade (well, it has in London at least) and is often included by name in menus (such as at Coq d'Argent in the City) and I've seen it used as a generic on a few websites.

I noticed the brief debate over roe vs meat in the article changelog. Indications I've found just now point to it being some "glued together to look like roe" product and I've added reference to these to the article. I can also verify that a good photo of the ingredients will show that it contains "smoked herring" with no mention of roe, I don't have a bottle handy but when I get one I'll take a shot for this article. I don't think these points prove the "not roe" argument, but they surely provide strong grounds for uncertainty.

There's another product on the market in the UK called "Onuga" which is also made from "smoked herring" and is referred to as a "reformed herring product" (interesting phrasing.)
