AWM caption :
"Place made: South Africa
Australian soldiers of the 1st NSW Mounted Rifles standing by a one pounder pom pom gun.
Identified is 210 Private John McCracken (left) and 320 Private Lucian Franklin Hayward. The centre soldier is unidentified, but believed to be Private William James Neild. All three were involved in the capture of a Maxim gun; for this action Hayward was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) and McCracken and Neild were both mentioned in despatches. Hayward's name is wrongly entered in the records as Lessian."
NOTE : The version placed online by the AWM is horizontally reversed, and the version shown here is corrected. The gun's ammunition feed was right-to-left, hence the ammunition box should appear on the right side; men's flies and shirts had buttons on the right, as now, hence left side should be seen to overlap right; the trooper's Australian hat should show brim folded up on left side. The belt should show the straps entering the buckle from the right.
