Il s'agit d'un hommage à l'Homère déifié d'Ingres peint en 1827. Ici, Homère, le vieux poète aveugle, chante ses épopées fabuleuses (l'Iliade et l'Odyssée) devant ses contemporains de toutes conditions, qui délaissent leur travail pour l'écouter. Leloir transpose son modèle, allégorie de l'héritage culturel de la Grèce antique, dans un univers poétique mais naturel. À la rigueur puriste du dessin ingresque, il ajoute les séductions de la lumière et de la couleur.
