[edit] Summary

Early (circa 1900) American Tool Works lathe. It has a 36" swing and approximately 15 feet between centers. It is of a design thought to be that of a predecessor company, Lodge and Davis. The design matches that of the 1895 designs of Lodge and Davis, but has American Tool Works cast on the headstock-- a company that was not formed until 1898. It is of a 'change gear' style, and by 1905 most lathes featured 'quick change' for changing the lead screw speeds.
