[edit] Discography Section

Kudos to whoever added all the compilations, singles, and additional titles ot the discography section. It looks great and very complete!

Grandeandy 20:41, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

Yeah.. it looks good huh? Thankz. I'm trying to find external information about the Unofficial releases, but it's kind of hard. I'm not sure if they're just fan releases that circled through P2P [etc...]. It seems some of them are releases by MP3 Rip Groups. BTW, did you add "We Do Freestyle" I added (Slug and Eyedeas) to the Title. I also found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Atmosphere_albums . This has to be updated at some point. I'm not sure if The Lost Live Cuts should go under Bootleg... (That's the category it was under when I found it) or under Unofficial.

--Flunkycarter 07:11, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

There was a small typo under the Singles section for "Uptown Jesus". Its year was listed as (200). I changed it to (2002). The only verification that I found for it was at this website: http://www.angelfire.com/hiphop/sluggoatmosphere/ Hopefully someone can find some better verification.

I got rid of the large table around the main studio albums because I felt they were unnecessary considering that the albums themselves have main articles. It also cluttered the page tremendously, and I feel that it helped give the page a better feel than previous.

[edit] History

It would be great to have some more history added to this article.

Grandeandy 03:08, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

I concur.

I've removed the category "White Rappers" Since Slug is half Black and half white. "Mullato Rappers" would be a more fitting category but it's rather silly to point out.

--Flunkycarter 07:09, 24 November 2005 (UTC)]

Slug is not half white and half black. He has a black grandfather making him only a quarter. I think the "White Rappers" tag is appropriate.

This is a touchy subject but since he's commonly perceived as a white rapper that would seem to be a valid categorization. [[[User:Asher14|Asher14]] 21:20, 4 March 2006 (UTC)]

Sean's father was black and Native American, and his mother was white. There is a huge bio on him here: http://www.citypages.com/databank/21/1022/article8787.asp puppetrevolt 20:05, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Atmosphere was formed in Rochester? Since when? This whole article is full of holes. Half of their most famous albums have no information. There used to be a lot of good information, but it all disapeared.

Slug never considered himself black though his father is not caucasian. When he moved to minneapolis he was called the inner city cowboy. What makes me mad about this article is the way it only talks about Slugs collaborations. Ant is a legendary producer. He has paved the way for TC producers. He has worked with people far and wide and yet there is no talk of this. I would greatly appreciate if somone would update that. And what about Spawn?????? and Dibbs still makes music. Slug isnt atmosphere they all are or were. [user:jokerjosh113]July 14th 2:16

Trouble is there's not a lot of easy to find information out there about anyone but Slug. Febodyed 09:41, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Does this article have a neutral point of view?

I've redirected all the links here, and I don't think that the "Crew" heading is a worthwhile search redirect.--TheGrza 06:33, Apr 21, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Atmosphere's Lyrics

Since the subject of Slug's fanbase has come up, can we broach the subject of possible misogynist readings of his lyrics? Stuff I've read and heard of his is iffy at best. I was wondering if anyone else thought about this.

Possible misogynist readings of his lyrics? This sounds like speculation and probably doesn't belong in the wiki. -69.225.194.195 21:20, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

I read it the opposite - that while not classically "feminist", Slug seems to promote equality amongst the sexes (unless you're a rapper, of course :)) 24.20.145.69 (talk) 02:21, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

I added the name of MPR's station on 89.3, which is called "The Current".

65.126.171.243 06:50, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

That doesn't sound like a valid Wiki addition unless it's been talked about in a more formal domain (journalistically, scholarly, etc). Could you give examples of what you mean? Slug repeatedly talks about the God and Devil as being female and likes to feminize the ungendered pronoun. If anything I think he's almost paganistic in his worshipping of women. I'm intrigued to see what you are referring to.

(Asher14 21:19, 4 March 2006 (UTC))

I don't think Atmosphere is mysogenistic. I can see how it would be interpretted that way, but when you compare it more mainstream rap (like 50 Cent, Ludacris, etc.) you'll notice that not once does Slug refer to women as either "bitches" or "hos" or any of the typical rubbish you get in hip-hop. Slug's lyrics that complain about women are more based around the usual frustration that most men have towards them than mysogeny.

He is not a misognist - women just evoke feelings of both love and hate. Take the song "The Woman With the Tattooed Hands" he talks about how both evil and good are embodied in women. He often speaks of his own codependency issues as a reason for failed relationships. Just because he has a song like "Fuck You Lucy" where he tears his ex-girlfriend and son's mother a new one, doesn't mean he hates every women. Many more songs are dedicated to his love and lust for women. After all he's just trying to "make it cool to rap about love again"

Exactly. And Slug has labeled many other things besides God and the devil as women in his lyrics.

[edit] Atmosphere Asset Naming

I suggest we start naming the various assets we use to enhance this page using the following method:

Atmosphere_Type_Name.jpg/gif/png

Example for albums: Atmosphere_Album_Album_Name_Here.jpg/gif/png

Example for Photos [Size 300Px300P - 96PPi] Atmosphere_Slug.jpg/gif/png Atmosphere_Slug_At_Wiltern_Los_Angeles.jpg/gif/png

Show Posters: Atmosphere_Admats_Pour_Me_Another.jpg/gif/png

Etc... Feedback?

--Flunkycarter 22:01, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

"Trailer Park Chicken," a hidden track, is definitely mysogynistic

Very mysogynistic indeed, however that was on the 1997 album Overcast!, in Slug's "younger" days. It's when Atmosphere was a 5-man crew, and only a select few of the songs on that album had much meaning behind them (I can't remember all of the songs off the top of my head, but Scapegoat would definitely be one of the more "serious" songs). Plus, it is a hidden track, not track 1 or 2. The lyrical content in the song can not be held accountable in reflecting Slugs view on anything. And I never quite understood where the name "Trailer Park Chicken" came from. I always knew the song as "Primer".

[edit] Audio Samples

It would be great to add some audio bits. How could we do this? I've seen some pages use .ogg files. Are they full samples or just 30 sec. clips? We should add some of atmosphere essential tracks like: God's Bathroom Floor, The River, Tattooed Hands.

--Flunkycarter 23:58, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

I agree we should add audio bits but the "essential" tracks are up for debate. We'll do so when we figure out a good way.

Asher14 21:25, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

Woman with the Tattooed Hands, Trying To Find A Balance, Always Coming Back Home To You, God Loves Ugly, Nothing But Sunshine and Pour Me Another would all be great audio clips, I think.

Essential hits could also be singles: "Say Hey There" off the recent "You can't imagine how much fun we're having" and previously "Trying To Find A Balance" off "Seven's Travels".

Definitely "nothing but sunshine" as it was the song that started it all and i think "Always Coming Back Home To You" also

How did "Nothing But Sunshine" start anything, and what did it start? It was just a story, or lie.

If I could reccomend some songs..

•Scapegoat (Overcast!) (since it was the hit of Overcast!)

•Caved In (Overcast!) (Atmosphere IS composed of more than slug, you know)

•Tears For the Sheep (Lucy Ford) (a symbolic rendition of what Slug believes his music would do to the indy hip-hop game)

•They're All Going To Laugh @ You (Lucy Ford) (perfect example of how he ties religion into some of his content. Also, he illistrates a conversation with God, as he depicts as a female)

•The woman With the Tattooed Hands (Lucy Ford) (mainly for the same reasons as "They're All Going to Laugh @ You")

•One of a Kind (God Loves Ugly) (one of the best "Indy vs. Mainstream" songs in Atmosphere's arsenal)

•Lifter Puller (Seven's Travels) (pretty deep love song, but also shows homeage to the band LFTR PLLR from The Twin Cities. He's perfeormed and even recorded with them in the past)

•Denvermolorado (Seven's Travels) (not many lyrics in this song, but amazing display of Ant's producing skills. Explains the emotional strugles of Slug's touring/traveling)

•Always Coming Back Home to You (Seven's Travels) (perfect song for expressing his love for his hometown. Plus, it's an Atmosphere classic)

•Shhh (Seven's Travels (hidden in the silence after "Always Coming Back Home to You") (another perfect example of his love for "Minnesnota". Much like the song before it, but with a different tone. He also makes various shoutouts to the surrounding areas at the end of the song)

•That Night (You Can't Imagine...) (because it reflects the events of the rape/homocide that occured after one of his shows (which, if I'm not mistaken, he's writen at least one other song about as well)

•Little Man (You Can't Imagine...) (superb song expressing his relationship between his father, his son, and himself) —Preceding unsigned comment added by M2B (talk • contribs) 17:59, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Slug Article

anyone know where it went!?Febodyed 09:48, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

It's probably not necessary: he hasn't done that many side-projects and Atmosphere has been Slug/Ant since since spawn left at the very beginning. The two stand-out projects is Deep Puddle Dynamics and Felt. Everything else is just guest-verses on random songs. For the most part, Atmosphere is synonymous with Slug, at least lyrically.

i disagree personally, but there you go Febodyed 01:02, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Cleanup and references

Working on a related Wikiquote article, I came across this article and started to do some basic style and format cleanup, but was stymied by the extent of case, punctuation, link, date, and formatting problems, compounded by the inconsistency of album and song title spelling, case, and formatting. Normally, I would go to sources like All-Music Guide and Amazon.com for clarification, but I found inconsistencies there as well. I have therefore tagged this article with both {{cleanup}} and {{unreferenced}} tags, so that editors with more knowledge about this group can determine appropriate sources with which to fix these problems. (These sources should be explicitly cited as well.) ~ Jeff Q (talk) 13:33, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

I finally went back and did most of the egregious punctuation, case, link style, and formatting errors, but I'm sure I missed some, and I did almost nothing about the wording. Sourced are still missing, too. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 02:41, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

I was looking in Billboard for the claimed #1 position of God Loves Ugly and found nothing, except a #18 position for "Modern Man's Hustle". Anyone know where the #1 claim came from? Faldizzle 00:34, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Slug's Name

I removed all the AKA bit of his name, because for a start it made the page look kind of ugly. Also, he mainly goes by the name Slug in Atmosphere, and I went into more detail about his name on the page about Slug. Febodyed 01:02, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Is Slug a moniker for 'Sean Likes Ugly Girls'?

No... well, I very much doubt it. If anything, Sean Likes Ugly Girls is a backronym of Slug Febodyed 18:07, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

"Slug is the main alias of Sean Daley, (born in 1973[1]), who is an underground rapper from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The name "Slug" is derived from Sean's childhood nickname "Little Sluggo", which came from his father's nickname "Sluggo". The backronym "Sean Likes Ugly Girls" was formed from his name as the title of an unofficial 5CD set. He also goes by the name Seven which he has tattooed (as Se7en) on his forearm." - Slug article

[edit] Sources

We really need to cite a lot of this stuff. I've pointed out everything that needs sourcing. Personaljesus 10:28, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 'That Night'

If we want to talk about the meaning behind 'That Night', then I really think there should be a section on exactly what happened and Slug's comments on the whole thing. I'll do some work on that later if nobody else does it. Personaljesus 10:28, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

here are some links to get you started on this part

Atmosphere is indie, is there any reason to think that posting the lyrics online is a copyright vio?

[edit] Similarities In Different Songs

I noticed a long time ago that the songs "Modern Man's Hustle" and "Reflections" have parts in them that are nearly identical. The first verse of "Modern Man's Hustle" goes as follows:

"The first time I met the Devil was at a Motel 6 she left Hell to spend a weekend on Earth just for kicks sexy little bitch, shorter than expected about five-foot five big an' thick in the breast and thighs beautiful, dark eyes a strong stare large lips, soft hands and long hair I said I'll make you smile for the simple fact Im good at it I'll make you smile just so I can sit and look at it."

Here is the second part of the second verse of "Reflections":

"The first time she met the devil was at first avenue went backstage with him into the dressing room sexy ego trip, taller than expected about six foot three, seemed to thrive on his misery critical, observant, big words sweaty hair, sunken eyes and thick curves she said I’ll make him smile for the simple fact that he needs it. I’ll make him smile just so I can kill it, and eat it."

I was wondering if anyone knew Slug's reasons for this? What is the significance of using practically the same lyrics in two different songs?

Princessjess07 16:43, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

He's telling the same story but from two different sides. Modern man's hustle is from his view, then in Reflections he looks at it from her view. Perhaps.Febodyed 16:32, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
