The Athens Classic Marathon is an annual marathon road race held in Athens, Greece. It was established in 1983 and has been run annually since, normally in November. It attracts about 3,000 participants from as many as 47 countries.
The marathon is dedicated to the memory of Gregoris Lambrakis, an athlete, a scientist and Member of Greek Parliament, who was murdered in the 1960s and has since become a symbol for human rights.
The 2005 winner of the marathon was James Saina (Kenya) in a time of 2:16:04, whilst the first female over the line was Sisay Measo (Ethiopia) in a time of 2:38:39.
