[edit] meteor vs. meteorite

The differenc between the two is that the metor is in outer space and the meteorite only exists after impact. That is why the first sentence uses meteor and the second uses meteorite. Bejnar 21:07, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Astrobleme paragraph

Is it really necessary to have a paragraph discussing astroblemes at the top of this category? We already have the article Impact crater, so wouldn't it make more sense to give, say, a one-sentence summary and refer readers to the main article? I'm not familiar with category conventions, so I'm not sure how this is usually handled. Also, can someone explain why this category is named "astroblemes" but the main article is named "impact crater"? Is there a reason for the inconsistency? →smably 16:58, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

The reason for the paragraph is to inform would-be users of the category, and why it is NOT Impact craters. Believe it or not, this was the result of a warm, but reasoned, discussion. The differences between impact craters and astroblems are important, although the categories do overlap. Not all astroblemes are impact carters, and not all impact craters are astroblemes. My best guess, and own opinion, is that no one feels that there is a serious necessity to separate the Impact crater article into two articles. I see from reading the current version that most of the physics of impact carters (and the non-astrobleme illustrations) are no longer present, so maybe it is time for someone to write an article on the physics of impact craters (aside from specific astroblemes), and move the existing article to Astrobleme. In the past, one objection has been that astrophysicists don't use the word astrobleme, but (in my mind) that could be fixed by a crossreference. Bejnar 19:58, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
