Astros Gunnarsdottir is an Icelandic dancer, choreographer, theatre director and Pilates instructor. She has worked as choreographer/dancer in Reykjavik, New York City, Boston, Barcelona, Paris, Tokyo, Turku, and Colombo. She was one of the founders of Reykjavik Dance Festival, in 2002, and was the Festival Director in 2005.
Among performances she has done are: Hair, The Rocky Horror Show, Evita, Anna Karenina, La Forza Del Destino, Blood Wedding, Grease, West Side Story, Singin' in the Rain, Piaf, The Wizard of Oz, Lazy Town, Little Shop of Horrors, Oliver!, Little Matchgirl and Karius and Baktus - the two last named she directed - as well as many Icelandic musicals. She has been nominated for several Gríma Awards, Icelandic Annual Theater Awards.
Astros studied at Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, in New York City. She is a Certified Pilates Instructor from Romana Kryzanowska, the protegée of Joseph Pilates. Astros was Head of the Modern dance department at the Icelandic Ballet School for 9 years. She has also taught at the Icelandic Ballet Company and many more ballet schools in Iceland and Finland. She lives with Thorfinnur Omarsson, a television personality and film/tv producer.
