[edit] Elmina

Regarding the sentence, "In 1863 the Ashanti again invaded the British coastal possessions, but were rebuffed and the important coastal town of Elmina fell to the British.", I can find no sources regarding Elmina in 1863. I assume this sentence means that the Ashanti controlled Elmina in 1863, but fought the British and their allies and lost control of it. I can find no sources citing this happening. Please cite a source for this if you put it back. Mr. Know-It-All 18:51, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

I amended the sentence "notably prior to the formal English abolition of slave trading, the Ashanti confederacy had already banned slave trading from 1827s onwards." because the British abolished the slave trade in 1807 some twenty years before the Ashanti - a pedant
