Ashley's bend is used to tie two ropes together, end to end. It is a secure bend and can put up with a good deal of strain and movement. It is similar to the Zeppelin bend. It is a non slipping knot and retains a high percentage of the lines strength.
To tie an ashley's bend, place the ends of the two lines to be tied together with one in each hand. Put a simple loop in the line in the left hand with the end passing under the standing part pointing left. Run the end of the line in the right hand up from under the loop in the left hand and form another loop toward your right, passing the end under that pieces standing part and over the line in the left hand below the loop. You should now have two interlocked loops with the ends of the two lines parallel to each other pointing off to the left. Now take both these ends and tuck then down through the two loops. Pull everything tight and you have Ashley's bend.
