Crusades task force

[edit] Merge

I recommend that Siege of Ruad be merged into this one. There's really not enough information to support two entirely separate articles. Also "Siege of Ruad" is leaning towards original research, since it's not really a major term used by historians. Wikipedia should be following the lead of outside sources, not trying to initiate names for battles. --Elonka 17:59, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

I disagree. In his chronology of the Crusades Alain Demurger attributes to September 26th, 1302, the "Defeat of the Templar garrisson in Ruad". Jean Richard attributes to 1303 the headline "Loss of the island of Ruad". Jonathan Riley-Smith attributes to 1302 "Muslims take island of Ruad from Templars". Steven Runciman describes the "capture of Ruad from the Templars in 1302". It is therefore an important and specific, if little-known, historical event clearly identifed by reputable historians of the period, and as such deserves an article on Wikipedia. Demurger has about 2 pages about the event. Demurger also describes it as a siege indeed, and goes into the details of how this siege happened. Finally, it is normal practice on Wikipedia to distinguish a geographical place (a city, an island etc...) from major historical battles or events that occured in it (cf: La Rochelle and Siege of La Rochelle), and both articles are bound to grow with time as new contributions come in. I agree that it's a notable event, I just don't think it's worthy of a separate article at this time. I'd still recommend keeping it all at Ruad for now, and then if the article does grow to a much larger size, it will be easy enough to split out a separate "Siege" article at that time. --Elonka 22:11, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
If it's just a matter of you having a temporary discomfort about article length (which I don't think is even really justified), we should just leave the articles as they are now, separated, in accordance with usual Wikipedia practices. PHG 06:13, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
