Dr. Richard B. Chase is Justin B. Dart Professor of Operations Management and Director of the Center for Service Excellence at the Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California. He received his Ph.D. in Operations Management, as well as an MBA and B.S. from UCLA. He has taught at the Harvard Business School, IMD (Switzerland), and the University of Arizona.

He is co-author with N. Aquilano and R. Jacobs of Operations Management: Manufacturing and Services (9th edition), which has been one of the top three sellers since its first edition in 1973. His research examines service process design and service strategy. Two of his Harvard Business Review articles, "Where Does the Customer Fit in a Service Operation?" and "The Service Factory" (with D. Garvin) have been cited as classics. His work has been quoted in Tom Peters' Liberation Management and Davidow and Malone's The Virtual Organization, and most recently in Heskett et al., The Service Profit Chain. He was listed among the top 20 contributors in the history of operations management in a recent International Journal of Operations and Production Management survey of academics in the field, and the Journal of Retailing identified him as one of the leading scholars in services marketing. Some of his recent articles include "Beefing Up Operations in Service Firms" (with R. Hayes), "Make Your Service Failsafe" (with D. Stewart) both in the Sloan Management Review, and "The Mall is My Factory: Reflections of a Service Junkie" in Production and Operations Management. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Management and the Decision Sciences Institute. He was also an Examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Dr. Chase has lectured/consulted recently on service and excellence to such organizations as General Electric, the Southern California Gas Company, the Cato Institute, the Conference Board, Aloha Airlines, The Davies Group, and the American Marketing Association. He has developed executive programs for Honeywell, IBM, and DEC. His money back service guarantee for his MBA course on Service Management has received international attention in the business press. Early life: Chase was born to Sally and Louis R Chase on May 4th, 1939 in Van Nuys, CA. He is the great grandson of Moses M. Barth (On his maternal side) who was the first Jew to arrive in Central Missouri. Moses started a dry goods store in the little town of Rocheport (10 miles outside of Columbia, MO)(http://whmc.umsystem.edu/invent/0997.html) but the Barth name was made famous in MO, OK, and KS by nephew Victor Barth (http://gscm.missouri.org/boonebios/biosb.html)who opened the Barth Clothiers in Columbia, Mo in 1886 (http://books.google.com/books?id=_PwBAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA837&lpg=PA837&dq=victor+barth+clothier+1868&source=web&ots=LdUX-qpxY6&sig=E1ATLTbFuQ-HL_AGGEMl5FQ5jao). The store still stands as of 2008 under the name Bingham’s Traditional Clothing(http://yellowpages.westsidestar.net/Binghams+Traditional+Clothing.327670.13968479.home.html)yet the building retains the Victor Barth name. Various Barth brothers and cousins spread out across MO,OK and KS opening their own locations.

Chase is also related to Albert Einstein thru marriage as both the Arnolds (Moses Barth's wife Mina's family name) and Einstein’s came from a small village near the Black Forrest in Germany named Jebenhausen (http://jebenhausen.worldzonepro.com/).

Chase is also an in-law to best selling author and Rabbi Jan Goldstein (http://www.jangoldstein.com/) most known for his novels, "All That Matters" and most recently "The Prince of Nantucket". Goldstein is the daughter of published poet and Vermont Poet Laureate, Roberta Butterfield Goldstein (http://www.alibris.com/search/books/author/Goldstein,%20Roberta%20Butterfield). Incidentally related to the famous Butterfield Overland Stage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butterfield_Overland_Mail)which pre dates Wells Fargo Express and American Express. Ironically in Springfield, MO a Butterfield Overland Stage location was later purchased by the Barths and became a clothing store. The Butterfields are also Mayflower descendants from three pilgrims including Francis Cooke (http://members.aol.com/calebj/passenger.html). This makes them cousins to both the Bush family and FDR(http://www.mayflowerhistory.com/Genealogy/famousdescendants.php). As a young boy Jan did summerstock at the St. Michael’s Playhouse in Colchester,VT (http://www.smcvt.edu/)with then unknown Jon Voight. Jan's father Frank owned the famous "Henry's Dinner" (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-10468302R-henrys_diner-i) in Burlington and also acted with Voight and had an acting award named after him from the Catholic University of America. He has a 5 minute seen with Jackie Mason in the 1972 film "The Stoolie" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072210/fullcredits#cast.

Chase is also related to St. Louis, MO Judge Irvin Victor Barth (son of Victor) 1877-1932 who is listed in Wikipedia under QEBH a senior honorary society that is unique to the University of Missouri-Columbia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QEBH). He was in the Chapter of 1898-99. Chase's father Louis (1913-2005) went to high school in Grand Rapids, MI with former President Gerald Ford (http://www.nndb.com/people/400/000022334/) and once commented that when their teacher said anyone of them could grow up to be President of The United States that no one laughed louder than Ford. Louis was a World War II vet that enlisted at the late age of 27 with a wife and 2yr old Richard. When asked why he joined up when he had several deferments he replied, "If my sons ever asked me what I did during the war I wanted them to know I was there fighting to save the Jews that we could have been". Louis because of his high test scores in the Navy spent most of his time state side traveling from one location to the next for more technical training. He later found out that he had over 140IQ which gave him membership to Mensa (http://www.mensa.org/). He spent the rest of his military career in the Pacific Theater showing up to Iwo Jima just days after the Allies had taken it from Japan. He often mussed that he was in the first picture of the flag being planed atop the Island. He was nicked named "Lucky" for unknowingly walking thru a Japanese infested portion of the Island Tinian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinian) and not being shot. Because of Richard's bad asthma Louis had to take low paying jobs when he returned from the war. The family was forced to live in desert locations such as Las Vegas, New Mexico and Lancaster, CA. Louis had graduated from UCLA in the late 30's just prior to Richard's birth. His mother Sally had received her degree from the University of MO. at Columbia in 1934 before she moved out to Los Angeles with her mother and Aunt. Sally met Louis when they were both writing for the largest Jewish paper in Los Angeles at the time the "B'nai B'rith Messenger". Both had a background in journalism which enabled Louis to handle both the crime beat and Hollywood section. He interviewed some of the biggest stars of the 30's. By the age of 10 Richard and family had moved back to Van Nuys where he would remain for the next 15 years. Louis got a job in aerospace as a technical writer and Sally had their 2nd child Lawrence in 1949. Lawrence Chase became a professor at Sacramento State in the Communications Department. He has several time been voted by the students "Most Popular Teacher" and was the recipient of the Outstanding Teaching Award in the College of Arts and Letters in 2001 (http://www.csus.edu/news/people/outstanding/01Chase.html). Richard received his undergrad, his grad and his doctorate from UCLA then was offered a teaching job in 1968 from Penn State in State College, PA. After two years he was offered a step up to teaching at the University of Arizona in Tucson. This is where he along with Nick Aquilano wrote the industry break thru text book: Operations Management: Manufacturing and Services which has been one of the top three sellers since 1973. Richard got married in 1962 to his college sweetheart Harriet and now has 3 grown children and 6 great grandchildren.
