Artist Pension Trust

The Artist Pension Trust (APT) is a for-profit organization that was started by entrepreneur Moti Shniberg, economist Dan Galai. Former SFMOMA and Whitney Museum director David A. Ross in 2002 was its founding President. The purpose of the organization is to provide long-term financial security to artists who otherwise may not have a retirement plan. Artist Pension Trust (APT) is the first investment program dedicated to the needs of emerging and mid-career artists. APT’s long-term financial planning services allow artists to invest their artworks alongside a community of select artists, thereby providing a uniquely diversified, alternative income stream.
Each Trust consists of 250 artists, invited at the rate of 50 per year over a five-year period. There are currently seven Trusts around the world, each serving artists in specific regions. APT exists in New York, Los Angeles, London, Berlin, Mumbai, Beijing, and Mexico City.
Participating artists deposit 20 works of art over a twenty-year period. The works, which remain owned by the artist while on deposit, are stored, insured, and conserved by APT during the time they are kept off of the market. The works are published online, and made available to curators for exhibition during this period. Artists do not have to pay for any of these services out front. Rather, when the works are finally sold on their behalf (between ten and twenty years after the deposit), APT takes 28% of the sale price, the artist receives 40% and the remaining 32% is divided between the other artists in his/her Trust.
APT is owned by MutualArt, a privately held company with its office at 298 5th Avenue, in New York City. Since July of 2006 APT has been headed by Bijan Khezri, its CEO and President. Pamela Auchincloss is Managing Director of Global Operations, and David A. Ross is Chairman of APT Curatorial Committees. Each Trust has its own Director. As of May 2007, Director of APT New York is Pamela Auchincloss, APT Los Angeles is Irene Tsatsos, APT London is Kay Pallister and Ilaria Bonacossa, APT Berlin is Susanne Prinz, APT Mumbai is Jai Danani, APT Beijing is Pi Li, Sunjung Kim and Mami Kataoka, and APT Mexico City is Pilar Tompkins.
