[edit] Biography section quality

I've noticed that the biography section here is pretty lacking. It's more like a trivia section about the band than a real biography. I wish I could do more about this myself, but I barely know the band (I came here looking for more info, since wikipedia rarely ever fails me when I'm searching for info about a band). So I'm posting this in hopes that someone might see it and actually go out of their way to reformat and expand the biography section. I also would like to ask about where Metal-archives.com was discussed, because I'm interested in seeing what other people have to say about that site. [edit] Notability dispute

To whomever tagged this article: if you haven't heard of a band it doesn't necessarily mean the band is not notable. Arsis has released two albums on a notable indie label Willowtip Records (whose other artists include Misery Index, Ion Dissonance, Circle of Dead Children). According to its official website, the band has toured all over U.S. and will embark on another tour in January with God Forbid. The albums need to be from a notable label as well. From the label's article, I didn't see any solid assertions of notability, which is why I figured putting on the notability tag would help resolve the issue. --Wafulz 17:41, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Mike has left the band to go back to school apparently.

Image:Arsis-logo.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. Whoever put black metal as a genre, your source is incorrect. Arsis has very little, if anything in common with black metal aside from James Malone's vocal style. Sorry Anonymous, but Wikipedia does not welcome personal opinions. Wikipedia does however welcome information cited from reliable sources and black metal was added with a reliable source. By the way, you can't cite metal-archives.com because it's not a reliable source, it's an open wiki that is very biased. --Leon Sword 00:11, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

So ask the band or something, because they are quite clearly not a black metal band. Listen to "Transilvanian Hunger" by Darkthrone, then listen to "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk" by Emperor, then listen to "A Celebration of Guilt" by Arsis and try to tell me they're the same genre. It should be removed for now, largely due to the fact that it is misleading, to say the least. I would also like to add that metal-archives is maintained by knowledgeable metal fans and should be allowed to be cited as a source for the genre of a band, seeing as how anyone can make a site and incorrectly label a band a certain (incorrect) genre. No metal-archives.com is NOT a reliable site. This very issue about the site's reliability has been discussed multiple times here on Wikipedia and consensus is that the site is definitely a questionable source. Rockdetector's credibility on the other hand has hardly ever been questioned. Rockdetector is only edited by the people that run the site and the bands whose biographies are on the site. If you truly believe Arsis is not black metal I will do another reliable source search and see what I come up with. --Leon Sword 01:18, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Well, my main grievance is the fact that Arsis don't call themselves a black metal band, as is verifiable by their myspace page. Their music features complex arrangements, frequent tempo/key changes (characteristic of death metal), (occasionally) disjointed rhythms (characteristic of death metal), scattered use of bridges (which is much more common in death metal than black metal), and highly frequent use of guitar solos (a rarity in black metal), among other things that I'm not really musically qualified to formally analyze that would separate them from black metal. It should be noted in the article that their music contains a small black metal influence, as is evident by James Malone's vocal style, but I don't think it should be put as a primary genre. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.70.10.53 (talk) 01:34, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

That's a reasonable argument and you're welcome to write up a section in the article talking about the band's musical style so long as it's cited from reliable sources. You can remove black metal from the infobox for now, but make sure to include it somewhere in the article. I wish I could settle this right now but it appears that I have got a virus and it's preventing me from doing anything except for brief periods of time. --Leon Sword 02:12, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
