[edit] Picture

Saint Simon, near the beginning of his memoirs, describes how he deceived M.de la Trappe by introducing an artist into his company for long enough to enable the artist to paint him from memory. The painting cost Saint Simon 1,000 ecus. Despite the fact that M.de la Trappe is shown holding a pen in his right hand, he in fact suffered from some disability that prevented him from doing so, and Saint Simon made a note on the back of the canvas to record this. Saint Simon later confessed his deception to the abbot, whom he deeply revered, and was forgiven. I presume the illustration on this page, which I was very interested to see, is that picture. 45ossington (talk) 09:06, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
