Arkansas Children's Hospital (ACH), an affiliate of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, is the only pediatric medical center in Arkansas and the sixth largest in the United States, serving children from birth to age twenty-one.[1] This pediatric health care facility is internationally renowned for medical breakthroughs and intensive treatments,[citation needed] unique surgical procedures and forward-thinking medical research.[citation needed]

Arkansas Children's Hospital has been voted one of the United States' top 10 pediatric hospitals,[2] and has been profiled on the Discovery Health Channel.[3]

In the 1980s, the woman who would soon become First Lady of the United States, United States Senator from New York, and a potential Democratic Party presidential candidate in the 2008 presidential election, Hillary Rodham Clinton, became the hospital's Honorary Chair, helping transform it into one of the nation's largest children's hospitals.

ACH is one of the largest employers in Arkansas and Fortune named the hospital in its top 100 "Best Companies to Work For" in 2008. [4]

In 2007 ACH treated the case of 20 month old Jacob Esses, which spurned the recall of the Aqua Dots toy. After swallowing a number of the toy beads, 1,4-butanediol coating the beads was metabolized to Gamma-Hydroxybutyric Acid (GHB, a recreational anesthetic). [5][6] The drug has been shown to cause unconsciousness, drowsiness, seizures, coma, or death.[7]
