Ariel is a video game character in the Legacy of Kain series. Throughout the series, she has been voiced by Anna Gunn. Early in the production of Blood Omen, Ariel was known as "Adonathiel".
[edit] Biography
Ariel served as the Guardian of the Pillar of Balance for about 470 years, from after Vorador's assault on the Circle until her murder at the hands of the Hylden Lord. Her murder was the linchpin in the downfall of Nosgoth. Upon finding her body, Ariel's lover, Nupraptor the Mentalist, fell into madness, which he psychically inflicted upon all the other members of The Circle of Nine.
Shortly after her death, Ariel came to haunt at the Pillars of Nosgoth. She guided Kain in his quest as a fledgling vampire, hiding from him that fact that he was destined to be her replacement as Guardian of the Pillar of Balance and the fact that he would have to sacrifice himself to make life as beautiful as it once was. After Kain refused the sacrifice, Ariel continued to haunt the Pillars, and would presumably do so forever.
During the course of the Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Ariel acts as counsel to Raziel after he claims the Soul Reaver, pointing him in the direction of Zephon's keep. After Zephon's defeat, it's possible to see Ariel again to take advice on Rahab and then after Rahab's death, she can offer insight on Dumah if the player doesn't mind backtracking to the Sanctuary of the Clans in between the boss fights.
In Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2, Ariel is more melancholic and heartbroken, appearing in the future time where the demons from the other dimension have completely taken over and becoming upset at Raziel's approach as he lectures her and then follows her into the Spectral Realm.
Within the course of Legacy of Kain: Defiance, Ariel is more confident as she appears during the time which Kain finds retribution in hunting down the other guardians, her faith sustaining her that he will sacrifice himself in the end to restore balance. Apparently, Ariel knew Raziel's true nature, being the prophesied hero of the Hylden race, having spoke of him as the one whom 'serves the one that brutally took her life'. Nevertheless, she points in him the right direction to Vorador's retreat.
At the end, the future Ariel was summoned, along with the soul of every balance guardian that came before Kain, at the Spirit Forge. The forge's power was transferred into the balance guardians and gave them each purified sight, which is seen in Ariel's purified form. Thus they willingly allow themselves to be devoured by the Soul Reaver attached to Raziel, thus transferring the power of the Spirit Forge into the wraith blade. This was a necessary sacrifice designed to arm the Scion of Balance, Kain, and thus allow him to fulfill his destiny.

- Originally, the scene where Raziel strikes down Ariel to consume her soul into the Soul Reaver was supposed to occur in Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, however, due to the approaching dead line, the scene was cut from the game (only to be used years later in Defiance). This scene can still be seen however in the original Soul Reaver when Raziel is walking through Moebius' Time Streaming Chamber, when he walks past one of the portals depicting different periods of time.
