Argyle Secondary School is a secondary school located in Lynn Valley. It offers both English and French immersion programs. Argyle is currently 33% over capacity (the facilities were intended for use by only 1200 students), and frequently turns away non-French-immersion students from beyond its catchment area.[citation needed]

[edit] Academics
Argyle offers French in an immersion environment. It also offers Spanish, Mandarin, French and German as classes of study. Argyle's school culture is less focused on academics than it is on its sports, band, and french immersion programs. Not surprisingly, many administrators and councelors are former physical education teachers.
[edit] Sports
Argyle is noted for its basketball, rugby, cross country, and soccer teams. The girls' soccer team had at one point won the provincial championships 5 years in a row. The X-country running has also been very successful, receiving their 5th North Shore Championship in a row; winning 3 of the 4 race categories. Moreover, Argyle also is the first school in the province to begin a cross-country mountain bike racing league.[citation needed]. Argyle also has a cheerleading team that is slowly gaining recognition for placing well in Sea to Sky Nationals as well as coming in 1st in their division in Six Flags in Texas in 2006.
[edit] Music
Over 60% of the student population participates in some form of musical activity within the school.[citation needed] Argyle's senior band and choir travel the world performing concerts and participating in festivals. The bands and choirs have performed in Vernon, Banff, Florida, New Orleans, Hawaii, Cuba and Europe.
[edit] Theatre
Argyle offers theatre programs such as acting, directing, and stagecraft. All theatre classes and most performances are in the James Buchanan Theatre. Performance areas such as lights, directing, and costumes are usually run by students.
[edit] Famous Students
A few of the famous students who have attended Argyle Secondary School include actor Jason Priestley, actress Rachel Cronin, National Arts Centre Orchestra musician Emily Smethurst, professional ice hockey players Paul Kariya and Brett Hull, singer Bryan Adams, and singer Trevor Guthrie of Soul Decision[1]. Paul Kariya's father, Tetsuhiko Kariya, was a mathematics teacher at the school for many years and a noted Rugby player. Rico Sponturri, an internet sensation, known for engaging in sexual intercourse with animals and posting it on various amature pornography sites, this man also was inprisoned for animal cruelty and other acts. Ironically he was raped by one of the guards, who he later charged.
