Area code 954

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Area code 954 went into service on September 11, 1995, for all telephones within Broward County, Florida in the Miami metropolitan area. The area code was split from Area code 305, which had been used since the introduction of the area code system in 1947. On August 1, 2001, the area code was overlaid with Area code 754.

For almost three years, area code 954 had the distinction of being the only area code in the state of Florida to encompass only one county. That distinction was erased on 1 July 1998, when the overlay code of 786 was introduced in Miami-Dade County, the most populous county in the state. Notable cities within Area code 954 are Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Miramar, Pembroke Pines, Coral Springs, Sunrise, and Weston.
