657 is a planned area code overlay for Northern Orange County, planned to be implemented in late 2008[1].
On Thursday, September 20, 2007, the California Public Utilities Commission approved an overlay of the whole 714 area with the new 657 area code. [1][2]
Permissive 1+ ten-digit dialing within the existing 714 region started no later than February 23, 2008. Mandatory 1+ ten-digit dialing within 714 will take effect on August 23, 2008, and the new 657 overlay area code first taking effect with new numbers a month later, on September 23, 2008. [3]
