Thanks for the barnstar!

It's most kind of you. Of course, you caught me when I'm over three days late with the Doctor Who update! (I'll head over there and add New Earth right away, thanks to your reminder!) —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 05:10, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

No problem. Articles like that don't work if people don't keep an eye on them. And what's this about the new season of Doctor Who starting? Last year's episodes were a couple weeks behind on this side of the Atlantic; I guess they are this year too. Arctic Gnome 06:18, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Yep; the first episode ("New Earth") aired in the UK last Saturday. I watched it with my family on Easter Sunday here in Connecticut, via means which I'd best not mention... ;-) I suppose that since Jesus wasn't averse to borrowing a donkey that wasn't technically his, he wouldn't object to a little time-shifted viewing. :-D
I'm not sure when Canada is scheduled to get the second series, but it's sure to be long before the programme airs south of the border — the US Sci-Fi channel just aired "Dalek"!. Lucky Canucks. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 06:25, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

Regarding Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of religions once classed as cults...

Would you consider changing your vote to keep the information to a strong keep if it were merged with List of groups referred to as cults or expanded into a broader topic: "The Transition from Cult to Religion." That might make a very interesting wikipedia article. cairoi 17:34, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Canadian Prime Ministers religious affiliation

The Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA) which Harper is a member of is an Evangelical Protestant denomination. I have no proff if Harper actually is a member of the church, however, Harper was not raised in the United Church of Canada. In 1925, the Presbyterian Church in Canada and the Methodist Church of Canada merged into the United Church of Canada, however the Harper family remained in a Presbyterian only church while growing up in Leaside according to Lloyd Mackey's book, The Pilgrimage of Stephen Harper. SFrank85 18:13, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Really, it is up to you if you want to put it back to the way it was. SFrank85 15:37, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Radio 2 & Radio 3

Hello. When you created the disambiguation pages for Radio 2 & Radio 3, it meant that over 100 articles are now pointing to those pages. Would you like to help disambiguating the articles so they point to their correct articles? I have already completely DABbed Radio 4. I find AWB invaluable. Cheers. The JPS talk to me 11:38, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Cheers. The temporary alternative would be to have Radio redirect to BBC Radio 2, and create Radio 2 (disambiguation). The top of the BBC Radio 2 page could then have Radio 2 redirects here. For other stations named Radio 2, see Radio 2 (disambiguation). This might be better until all the links point directly to their correct articles. The JPS talk to me 16:14, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Manual of style

You asked a question about date links in the Manual of style. In most cases, the date links are unnecessary and only put there by people that misunderstand date preferences. Feel free to remove unnecessary date links.

You may wish to make use of a 'Dates' tab in edit mode that will help with unlinking unnecessary date links. Simply copy the entire contents of User:Bobblewik/monobook.js to your own monobook. Then follow the instructions in your monobook to clear the cache (i.e. press Ctrl-Shift-R in Firefox, or Ctrl-F5 in IE) before it will work. It also provides a 'Units' tab. Regards. bobblewik 14:23, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

bold text

Just a heads up, if you want to remove bold text, you should just remove the font, not the word itself. By taking out entire words you are leaving nonsense sentences that look like vandalism. --Arctic Gnome 16:14, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Can you give me an example? I think I know what you mean, but I'd like to see for myself. Alphachimp talk 17:10, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
OK. I understand what you mean. I've been trying to go through Wikipedia and remove accidental clicks of Bold Text. In the process, though, I accidentally removed bold text that was actually use legitimately. Most of the time I went back and fixed the mistake immediately, but I guess that I missed the Canada article. Sorry about that. Trust me, though, it wasn't vandalism. License tagging for Image:Paul Martin04.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Paul Martin04.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Assessment for WPCANADA

Just want to remind you that {{A-Class}} is a very high rating, it's near {{FA-Class}}, and should not be accorded lightly. Only a few of the articles you assessed as such deserve the rating, and those should go throgh GA-review and peer-review first (that helps to smoothen out the articles too). I suggest more conservative rating. Otherwise, thanks for the effort put in WP:CANADA. Cheers. --Qyd 16:01, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Sure, assessment is subjective (it's the reason why I told you about this instead of just changing the assessment). I wouldn't consider A-Class some lists (like List of Canadian Leaders of the Opposition), articles with abundant red links (List of Canadians by ethnicity), poorly formated articles with stubby sections (like Quebec), articles with very few references (Supreme Court of Canada, Conservative Party of Canada (historical)), articles with large trivia sections (John A. Macdonald). There are other elements that downgrade artilces (bulleted lists instead of prose, incomplete coverage of the subject, etc). Peer review, Good Article review and Featured Article review help a lot to improve the articles, and that's the reason why I suggest going through those stages before according A-Class status. Cheers. --Qyd 04:56, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

According to the general assessment criteria, "A-class" is only given when the article is considered completion. So just give B-class for now, and submit them through GA review as mentioned by Qyd if they are very well referenced. Cheers! AQu01rius (User • Talk) 19:26, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Election timelines as a featured topic

Thanks for your comments on the above. My original plan was to nominate the federal, provinical and territorial lists together, but as more work has been done on the non-Federal lists, I was going to nominate those first. Good idea about the pre-Condfederation ones - they should definately be included. The main difficulty is finding sources on the net.

I'm wondering what to call the topic... I was planning on "Canadian provinical and territorial elections", but you're right, this would include articles on individual elections... I'm inclined towards just "Timeline of Canadian elections", but this doesn't feel quite right. Any thoughts?

While I remember: do you know of a potential reference for New Brunswick, PEI and Yukon lists? I haven't been able to find anything online, so I was wondering if you knew of any useful books/websites that could be used as references. (The orginal editor used a book from the library, which they don't know the title of).

For the Timeline of Canadian elections article, I'm considering including federal elections (probably as a double-width column)... what do you think? Also, many thanks for all the work you've put in on that article - it's really helped it sparkle. :-)

Enceladus

Not a problem. I had just learned about the whole featured topic thing (not that it isn't a bad idea) and I remembered that article and wondered why it wasn't there (since it's pretty good). But it makes sense there would be a nominating process. Daniel Case 03:25, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

That person has no intention of giving up his crusade to delete the image. He seems to have a vendetta against Stephen Harper especially when he's using an outdated page to make the case for his argument. ViriiK 21:45, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

I have nothing against the Prime Minister and in fact like the photograph. I want to clear up the copyright and until this can be done, the image should not be used. There must be a photograph somewhere that doesn't have this kind of copyright baggage. Alan.ca 23:27, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

I see that you're new to wikipedia and I don't want to be responsible for making your experience displeasurable. On wikipedia, we try to be careful about not violating copyright. In fact, the founder Jimbo Wales, has made a formal statement that we are to seek out free use images. In the case of this photograph, we have two sections of the same web site asserting different copyright. In this case, we need to make certain that one or the other is removed. Failing that, permission from both listed copyright holders would be appropriate. The ideal solution would be for a wikipedian to snap a photo of Stephen Harper and release it as their own work under a free license. You're not helping anyone by continuing this revert war with me. You're simply flooding the edit history of both the Stephen Harper article and the history of the image. This makes it difficult for future editors to make sense of the edit history and it will not achieve anything for you. Please be patient, let the admin staff review the deletion request and copyright information. Alan.ca 23:26, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Timeline of Canadian elections

Many thanks for your considerable input into the Timeline of Canadian elections list, which has now made Featured List status :-) By the way, what was your source for PEI having 25 elections prior to joining the Confederation? It would be nice to get them listed at General elections in Prince Edward Island (pre-Confederation) or similar. (Although listing pre-Confed elections seperately causes problems of its own... see Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of New Brunswick general elections...).

Anyway, thanks once again for your contributions. Tompw (talk) 01:26, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

I have reverted your edit to Barenaked Ladies as, while I agree that the song has had numerous names in text, the name of the article that is being linked to is If I Had $1000000, and it's silly to link to a redirect when one is knowledgable of the article's proper name. iTunes Originals has no standing in officiality. The titles of the tracks are written by iTunes, as songs like In The Drink are mistitled. Just like the etown recording (also on itunes) which calls Old Apartment "Where we used to live" or something. this copy of the yellow tape does not have an "a" in the title of the song. Nevertheless, this yellow tape, Gordon, and the singles for the song should be the most official titles. TheHYPO 19:17, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Lengths of PMs time in office

I think we might be adding them up differently. Feb 5, 2007 was his 365th day in office, but that is still not a complete year. There are 365 days in a year, but when it his 366 days, then it is a complate year, starting a new year. Feb 6, 2007 was Harper's one year in office, Feb 7 was Harper's 1 year and one day. SFrank85 23:32, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

The dates for the prime ministers' terms in office now don't agree: the date in the information boxes vs. the date in the articles. Examples are Trudeau (June 29 vs June 30) and Mackenzie King (Nov. 14 vs Nov. 15). If you change one date in each prime minister's article, should you not change all the dates for each article ... for consistency? Que-Can 05:30, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the update Arctic.gnome. I think we can agree that the page is now correct. SFrank85 21:11, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
I still think the days for Harper is wrong (not total days). There are 365 days in one year. Once you hit 365 days in a year, it is now a new year, but the last day of the first year. February 6 is Harper's first year, but according to this, his first year anniversary was on February 5, which is wrong. SFrank85 15:08, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
OK, thanks for claering it up with me. We shall use your system. SFrank85 17:35, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Prime Minsters of Canada, departure dates

I've fixed the dates (Mackenzie to Martin), when these PM resigned & their successor's were sworn in. My source? Prime Minsters of Canada by Jim Lotz (c.1986). As for Campbell, Chretien & Martin, CBC News made it quite known, when these respective PM's resigned and their successor were sworn in (the resignation & swearing in occured on the same date; give or take a few hours). This notion that a defeated or retiring PM resigned a day before his/her successor was sworn in, is the wrong notion (the only execption were the 19th & early 20th century PM's). GoodDay 23:20, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

I've added 2 more external links to List of Prime Ministers of Canada to back my edits. Furthermore, I have a 'Funk & Wagnalls' Encyclopedia set that backs my edits. Also, in 1984, 1993, 2003 & 2006, while watching CBC news (Canada's leading News channel), they distinctively announced the outgoing PM's resignation occuring earlier on the same day as the incoming PM's being sworn in. Finnaly, I think Jim Lotz did research, before he wrote his book.GoodDay 23:51, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
I removed one of the External Links (which I added, earlier), it was inconsistant (it actually had Campbell leaving office Oct 25, 1993 -Election Day). I'm signing out for the night. As we have conflicting sources, I suggest we have a Rfc for all PM of Canada pages & the List article. An 'Edit war' wouldn't be good. GoodDay 00:06, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Hello, Artic.gnome, I've just signed in. Do you think we should have an Rfc on this topic, seeing as we have conflicting sources for the dates? GoodDay 18:38, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

An editor has nominated Liberal Party of Ontario leadership convention, 1899, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not"). Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Liberal Party of Ontario leadership convention, 1899 and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. Free content on Wikipedia

Hi,

This is very late reply to what you asked two months back on Wikipedia talk:Mirrors and forks. You asked how could Wikipedia allow its content to be freely used by anyone, even to make profit for themselves. A number of people answered your query, but in the end you looked unconvinced. I chose to reply to your page itself as you might not be watching the said page till now. Hopefully in the two months, you would have understood more about our philosophy, but if you haven't here's my sincere attempt.

Wikipedia licenses its content under the GNU FDL license, which is a copyleft license. In short, this means that anyone can use the content for any purpose, provided they also license the content under GNU FDL with full text of the license, and acknowledges all the authors of the content. Full details of this can be found at Wikipedia:Copyrights. Also note that the top of the page says: "The Wikimedia Foundation does not own copyright on Wikipedia article texts and illustrations." Thus, Wikipedia is a place where you can license your contributions under the GFDL, but this doesn't make Wikipedia own the work done by you. The Wikipedia encyclopedia chooses to make the content freely available to anyone throughout the world, free from any kind of advertisements or other bounds. This moral high ground need not be taken up by anyone using GFDL content. Some may want to use the content commercially by making it a part of their own website, by selling CDs, etc. But whoever chooses to do this also understands that if s/he wants to make profit, there should be something that would distinguish him from Wikipedia. For example, if there is a Wikipedia mirror that contains lot of pop-up ads, and spam anyone who visits the site, there would be a good reason for someone to use that website rather than the plain-ol' Wikipedia. Also, making into CDs would require some effort on his own part. Add to the fact that anyone can copy his business model, so it would be difficult to operate such a business on supernormal profit. While the example I gave is good to give an understanding of how Wikipedia's content cannot be exploited beyond a certain extent, but in reality, Wikipedia did not start functioning with this hindsight. Wikipedia just wanted to make things freely available to everyone. The best way that this was possible was to use the power of the internet. The content is so free that the only thing we want to ensure is that it remains free even in the derivative works (that is why we expect our mirrors to be GFDL compliant). It is true many people who contribute to Wikipedia actually think that they still own the content. Another whooping majority thinks that the content gets owned by Wikipedia. Frankly, I believe that if everyone is made truly aware of how free we make our content (especially with regards to commercial redistribution), many contributors will stop contributing. But there are still many people (like me, of course) who believe in promoting freedom of knowledge. Thus we all contribute for the greater good of humanity (as a near perfect charity work). Looking at your userboxes, I find that your contributions are perfect charity as you release all your content to the public domain. This means that anyone can use the content originally created by you for any purpose, even without acknowledging you, and even if you wish they don't.

Hope this clarified your doubts. If you have any more outstanding queries, I will be glad to answer. — Ambuj Saxena () 12:19, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi

Hi. Sorry if I seemed snappy on the Featured Topic Removal candidates in my attempt to clarify; I've been under a lot of stress lately, which is why I'm preparing for a wikibreak. — Deckiller 04:38, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Ralph Klein.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 48 hours after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Abu badali (talk) 17:45, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

Featured Topic Viability

You seem to be someone who is very involved with WP:FT. I just received my first WP:FA this week. I am attempting to understand the prospects of a WP:FTC for

Featured articleCampbell's Soup Cans
Andy Warhol {{GAnominee|2007-03-31}}
The Factory
Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board

I am guessing I would have to leave the last one out of the topic. Would I have to research The Factory to site it or can this group be nominated if Warhol gets a GAC? TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 04:29, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

I am guessing you are saying if Andy Warhol is the topic The Andy Warhol Museum would need a true article and The Andy Warhol Foundation would need an article. In addition, The Factory, andAndy Warhol Art Authentication Board would need great improvement. However, Campbell's Soup Cans might make it with just the first three articles.
