In the past, this school used to have high standards requiring top marks in grade 9 (usually above 80%); however, in recent years admission standards have become more lax thereby admitting a greater number of students than in the past. As a result problems of overcrowding have become apparent and there is a big need to renovate and expand the school.

Archbishop MacDonald used to be considered one of the top academic Catholic high schools in the Edmonton school district (is it still^{[citation needed]} ?).
