Arboretum Lussich

The Arboretum Lussich it's a Arboretum of 192 ha (470 Acres approx.), it's in the Maldonado Department in Uruguay near Punta del Este and Punta Ballena.

On October 5 in 1896 Antonio Lussich bought a terrain of 4.447 acres (1800 Hectares), which extend from "Arroyo el potrero" to "Sierra de la ballena" and from Rio de la plata to Laguna del sauce, in which in that times there were only sand dunes and stones.
The next year Antonio Lussich started the forestry works which had as objective, by one side to forestry the dry lands, trying to stop the high winds that came from the ocean, and by the other, once the forest was finished, to bring Birds to inhabit it.
in order to do that Antonio Lussich thanks to the enetrprise of maritime rescue and the contracts obteined all over the world because of it,he could manage to get seeds from all the continents. He started to bought seeds, plants and trees form all over the world and planted them around his house.
The first trees being planted were: Tamarix, Sea pines,Eucalyptus and the Acacia trinervis to fight against the strong winds and the sand.
On December in 1979 182 ha (450 Acres approx.) were donated to the Municipality of Maldonado, and then those lands were opened to public.
The Arboretum Lussich it's one of the most important Forest Reserve in the world. [1].

The Arboretum Lussich have more than 400 Exotic species and around 70 Uruguayan species. [2].
Between many of the trees species, the most important are:
- Abies, 6 especies.
- Acacia, 8 especies.
- Cupressus, 9 especies.
- Eucalyptus, 45 especies.
- Juniperus, 10 especies.
- Pinus, 20 especies.
- Quercus, 16 especies.
- Thuja, 4 especies.
