Vasily Vereshchagin. The Apotheosis of War (1871).
Although inspired by Tamerlane's conquests, the painting came to be associated with the Russo-Turkish War, 1877-1878. Ever since the 19th century, it has been admired as one of the earliest artistic expressions of Pacifism.
It is exhibited at the Tretyakov Gallery of Moscow.
