[edit] AOL vs Kaspersky

I know this article is just a stub, but most users are interested in one thing: Is AOL AVS the same as Kaspersky with just a different logo? Nikos 18:30, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

  • Yes, but the version of AOL is not include some components. Gdn 13:38, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] June 2007

Rumors of Vista release is outdated. Does anyone know when it will be out? I'm changing the month since it wasn't released in may I will assume it will be released in June. Hopefully someone will find out.

The latest version (you have to download it directly from here, where all AVS files are located) works with Windows Vista. Stephenchou0722 01:47, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

On that note, I installed it and it killed my laptop running vista...:(

[edit] spyware and/or data mining??

There are strong rumours on internet about this antivirus packing spyware and that it does data mining on personal information on files of your computer or in the data you provide to aol when you register this program in order to use it. Is this true? Are there any serious evaluation/report on the net about this issue? (e.g. the virusbulletin reports or a serious not sponsors-biased review like www.sharkyextreme.com) --Licurgo 06:43, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Discontinued (?)

According to the home page www.activevirusshield.com, this product is now discuntinued! There's just a message saying "We're Sorry! AOL® Active Virus Shield is no longer available."

Strangely enough, though, if you go to download.com you can still download it - download.com redirect you to http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/get_started.adp which apparently still works. (And the actual download is not from activevirusshield.com but from nullsoft.com, which you probably know is Winamp's site.)

Maybe one should wait and see for a few days what the deal is?

AOL is already offering a no-cost substitute to every user with a free AOL account. Stephenchou0722 14:00, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Well the new antivius distribution I guess it is quite dangerous approach to download it via online with out any antivirus software installed. I think AOL should review the distribution method other wise they will not find people to download and install the Anti Virus product. --Umapathy (உமாபதி) 19:15, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] How to fix

  1. shutdown Kaspersky ActiveVirusShield. Closing the main window is not enough, please click on the systray icon and exit.
  2. locate the XML file listing the update servers. It's usually located in directory C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL\AVP6\Data and the name of the file is aol-updcfg.xml
  3. edit that file and remove the two following lines
<site2 url="ftp://download.newaol.com/avs/update/mirror/" diff_url="diffs" weight="10000001" region="*" />
<site2 url="http://download.newaol.com/avs/update/mirror/" diff_url="diffs" weight="10000000" region="*" />
  1. save the file
  2. restart ActiveVirusShield and launch an update from the systray icon's contextual menu. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.203.136.219 (talk) 18:22, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
Well I have formated the my computers HDD today and I tried to reinstall the Active Virus Shield it did installed but I could not find a way to Activate using the previous key. SO AOL Active Virus Shield is pretty much a history I guess. --Umapathy (உமாபதி) 19:03, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
