This article was culled from sources with non-corroborating (if not conflicting) informaton.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1666018/bio has Swofford:

  • Holding a Master of Fine Arts in writing from the University of Iowa, and
  • Holding tenure as an English professor at St. Mary's College of California

Whereas, http://www.simonsays.com/content/destination.cfm?sid=33&pid=364360&agid=13 has him:

  • Being "educated" at American River College, the University of California, Davis, and the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, and
  • "Teaching" at University of Iowa and Lewis and Clark College

If anyone knows any further information about Swofford's history, or has any recommendations as to how this information should be presented, please make the changes and/or leave me a comment. Thanks!

[edit] Fabulism

There is at least one incident reccounted in the book that is verfiably made up. The story about the marine who's wife sends him a video-tape and edits footage of herself having sex with the neighbor is a well documented urban legend. (See Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/military/videobye.asp ). In light of the allegations of making stuff up that have been leveled at other memoirists, are there other elements of this book that can not be documented, or rather can be shown to be false? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.73.106.65 (talk) 01:17, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

I had a class from Swofford at Lewis & Clark, where he was a visiting adjunct professor for one year (from Fall 2002 to Spring 2003, during which period Jarhead was released). I know that after that, he left to teach at Saint Mary's, so that much jibes, and I do know that he had the MFA from the Writer's Workshop, though I can't confirm his earlier education. -Anon

I spoke with earlier School and no he was not a Professor he was there as a mid replacement for 3 months only once again he inflated his experience and basically lied. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.116.134.240 (talk) 04:07, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Swofford's earlier education

I was in a class with Tony in 1996 at American River College. I know he went there at least a year, probably three semesters (he was an editor of and contributor to the American River Literary Review, a very high caliber journal - for a community college ... http://english.arc.losrios.edu/review/ARLR.htm). He actually later attended Sacramento City College (1997) before transferring to UC Davis. He did indeed graduate with a BA in English at Davis before going on to the University of Iowa writer's workshop. (He did teach at Lewis and Clark first, then St. Mary's - 2003-04. He resigned St. Mary's after he sold the movie rights to Jarhead.)

[edit] payday?

Anyone have any idea how much money he received to make Jarhead a movie? 67.110.221.182 (talk) 00:31, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Have no idea, but he's a damn good writer. And the soundtrack to Jarhead is fantastic. :-) :-) learnportuguese 23:03, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
