Description

Water Festival at Bayonne. Black chalk, pen and ink wash. 45 × 49.5 cm. Pierpoint Morgan Library, New York.

This is a design for a tapestry illustrating the festivities at the summit meeting between the French and Spanish courts at Bayonne in 1565. The tapestry itself, finished no later than 1580–81, includes full-length figures in the foreground, possibly designed by a different hand.
