Antonio Jose Guzman (August 02, 1971) is a Dutch-Panamanian audiovisual artist. He works with a variety of medias, mixing issues as migration and gravity.
Born in Panama City, Panama, Guzman's mother is an environmental activist, but before retiring in 2006 she served 35 years as a Diplomatic and traveled all over the globe, representing Panama in the United Nations. His father, a musician and a percussionist play in the 70's with Rubén Blades y Los Salvajes del Ritmo and worked also as an accountant for a Panamanian firm. As Guzman was growing up he began studying photography and video, and became interested in polaroids at early age. In 1989 Guzman started communication studies but soon in 1992 he had to flee Panama, after the United States invasion of Panama. He first fled to Costa Rica where he studied cinematography, but later moved temporarily to Madrid. A year later, in 1993, he was back in Panama and started working for the advertising giant Foote, Cone & Belding (FCB) Draftfcb as a staff photographer. In 1994 he graduated from the Ithmus University. He wrote a thesis on the psychological effect of advertising photography.
In the summer of 1996 he was part of the Lockport (city), New York African American seminars on photography. In 1997 he moved to Europe and started working as an artist, editorial photographer and as an editorial staff of different magazines in Barcelona, London and Amsterdam. In 2003 he produced and directed his first documentary, "Representando". [1] [2] [3][4]
In 2004 he started studies on audio visual arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie of Amsterdam. While studying at the Rietveld, Guzman got inspired to work with electronic art and began to work with gravitational issues, migration and the life of Dutch artist Bas Jan Ader. His examination project "Gravitational Experiences",[5] was a series of multiple channel installations and the documentary "The Miracle".[6] In 2007 he took part in the exhibition "Multiple M", in which he participated with "Chain Diary", [7] an installation with 8 multiple projections, and 12 oversized photos. In January 2008, Guzman began working with Samsung's newest mini portable video projector to combine video, sound and performance. In his new project State of L3 he asks participants to upload their work onto a database so that their partners and later on other visitors can access, watch and react with their own ideas to what they see. In this way the database will create and ever-growing and expanding online community based on either personal histories or just interest in Africa and all its cultural and social expansions over the entire globe. Guzman is part of the art movement, known as zero gravity art, which is inspired by the Foundation for Art in Zero Gravity. The importance of Guzman work relies in the symbolism of his work as a social artist, his installations are emanating from a cycle of migration, diaspora and gravitational situations.
