Antonio Bajamonti

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Antonio Bajamonti (Split, 19 February 1822 - Split, 13 January 1891) was an ethnic Italian politician from Dalmatia. He was one of the most successful mayors of Split which was/is an undisputable fact even for his political competitors.[citation needed] He was an autonomist who rejected the unification of Dalmatia with the rest of Croatia. He was a medical doctor by profession.

He became mayor of Split in 1860. One of his successful projects was construction of the water supply to Split. When he openly declared himself as Italian, his political career was destroyed and pro-Croatian parties conquered the majority in the Split municipality. However his mandate was famous for ethnic conflicts between pro-Italians and Croatian majority. When he died, the information about his death was displayed in almost all the press in the Kingdom of Italy.[1] His death was shown as a big tragedy for Italians in Dalmatia.

His most famous work was construction of the big fountain that was named later after him. Three months later after the second opening the fountain Dr. Bajamonti died. The fountain was destroyed in 1947 by communists who have considered that as a symbol of fascist domination.
