Annihilator guitar

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Annihilator is a custom-built guitar that is used by Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein of the Misfits. The guitar was created following the breakup of the original Misfits (in which Doyle used an Ibanez Iceman guitar, around the same time that his older brother Jerry Only was building his graphite 'Devastator' bass.

[edit] Shape and Features

The Annihilator is a very aggressive appearing guitar due to its sharp corners and spear-like headstock. Its bass counterpart, the Devastator, also has the same sharply cut body, but instead of a relatively symmetrical flare, the Annihilator ends in a sharply angled block. The headstock has no cyclopian skull or other decorations, but rather a Misfits Fiend Skull logo and a pointed tip. Heavy-gauge Dean Markely strings deliver a punishing crunch, and during his time in the Misfits Doyle ran the guitar through a bass amp head.

[edit] Versions

The Annihilator has been modified occasionally to suit Doyle's playing needs. The most common modification has been for cosmetic reasons, the most recent being a headstock skull change. The Annihilator no longer has a Fiend Skull on it, but rather the Frankenstein skull of Doyles' new band, Gorgeous Frankenstein.

[edit] Commercialization

Although in popular demand by fans, the Annihilator has not been reproduced or duplicated for wide commercial uses. This is due to the disproportionatly high cost of building such a radical guitar as the Annihilator in large quantities.
