Annasaheb M. K. Patil (born 15 September 1939) is an Indian politician with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

He was a member of parliament in the 14th Lok Sabha of India (May 2004-Dec 2005), representing the Erandol constituency of Maharashtra[1], before being expelled on December 23, 2005, after the sting Operation Duryodhana. The expulsion is currently sub judice.

In the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government (1999-2004), he was Minister of State for Rural Development.

He is connected to the sugar industry in Maharashtra, and is the chairman of the Belganga Co-operative Sugar Mills. He has a degree in sugar technology, as well as an M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering.

[edit] Taking Bribes for Questions in Parliament

In the sting Operation Duryodhana[2] by the Noida based media firm Cobrapost, aired December 12, 2005 on the Indian Hindi news TV Channel Aaj Tak, Patil was caught on video accepting bribes of Rs. 45,000 for fielding questions in parliament.

At one point in the sting operation, he proposes to muster up support from a cross section of politicians and spells out a strategy to influence various parliamentary committees, for the payment of Rs 10 lakh. He also suggests a retainership of Rs. 50,000 per month for asking any number of questions:

Patil: Mutual relationships ka agreement.
Reporter (Suhasini Raj): Haan (Yes).
Patil: To mujhe lagta hai ki kam se kam chhe lakh rupya to saal mein aana chahiye.(Then I think I should get at least six lakh rupees a year).
Reporter: Theek hai (Okay).[2]

These amounts, he suggests, would go towards his re-election expenses; he admits to spending Rs. 1.5 crore in the 2004 elections.

Also, he claims to be a graduate of IIT Kanpur, which is not supported by his official biodata[1]; he appears to be a graduate of the National Sugar Institute, Kanpur.

[edit] Expulsion from Parliament

On December 23, 2005 he was expelled from the Lok Sabha following the adoption of a motion calling for the expulsion of all 11 MPs caught in the sting.
