[edit] Earliest monastery founded by Anglo-Saxons on the continent

The article text states, "The earliest monastery founded by Anglo-Saxons on the continent is Echternach (698)." Saint Rumbold however, was supposed to have been an 'Irish' (though possibly Scottish) missionary who built a monastery at Mechelen. He is often seen as a contemporary of Willibrord and as a brother of Himelin and thus as an Anglo-Saxon missionary. The traditionally accepted date of his death in 775 would not contradict the statement, but recent state-of-the-art examination of his relics in the St. Rumbolds Cathedral showed a death date between 580 and 655. That would make the assumed monastery at Mechelen several decades earlier than the one in Echternach. I assume the doubt about his death date would make St. Rumbold a Hiberno-Scottish missionary. — SomeHuman 8 Nov 2006 21:11-21:24 (UTC)
