This non-free photograph illustrates Premier Macdonald exercising his official duties at the Nova Scotia Legislature on an historic occasion. At that time, Nova Scotia's allegiance to the British Crown was an important part of the province's culture and this photograph illustrates that importance. A few months after this photograph was taken, Macdonald opened the legislature by calling the British Crown "the magic link that unites this still great Empire and Commonwealth."
