"Better in Time" is a neo soul/pop ballad written by J. R. Rotem and Andrea Martin and produced by Rotem for Leona Lewis's debut album, Spirit (2007).[1] It is the fourth track on the album, and is to be released in March 2008 as Lewis's third single, as a double A-side with "Footprints in the Sand",[2] in aid of charity Sport Relief.[3][4][5]

From 11 February 2008, "Better in Time" was BBC Radio 2's record of the week.[6][7]

To promote the single, Lewis will perform both sides of the single on Dancing on Ice on 9 March 2008, with a special ice dance routine performed by Torvill and Dean.[8]

"Better in Time" has been described by Chung Ah-young of The Korea Times as "one of the best tracks [on the album] with impressive piano sounds harmonized with her powerful vocals."[9]

[edit] Chart performance

On 24 February, "Better in Time"/"Footprints in the Sand" debuted at number 74 on the UK Singles Chart three weeks before its physical release. The following week, the doube A-side fell out of the chart, but "Better in Time" debuted on its own at number 38.[10]

Following the initial announcement of the single, the song reached number 27 in the official UK Top 50 Airplay Chart the song jumped to number 27, from a last week place of number 186.[11] Two weeks later, it jumped to number 7 from number 19.[12]

The music video for "Better in Time" was filmed at Hampton Court Palace in London by acclaimed British director Sophie Muller in February 2008.[13][14] Lewis stated in an interview that part of the video was shot in Los Angeles.[15] The video is inspired by fashion design, and features Lewis performing in front of "unrelated photographic set-ups",[16] and showing what goes on behind the scenes.[15] Parts of the video also feature Lewis with a horse.[17][18][19] The video premiered on Lewis's YouTube channel on February 29, 2008.[20]
