[edit] My concern about your username (Andy Farrell)

Hello, Andy Farrell, and thank you for contributing to Wikipedia!

I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?

Your chosen name is very similar to that of the well-known rugby player, Andrew Farrell, which could lead to potential confusion. (If you are that Andrew Farrell, please note this fact on your user page).

I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.

You have several options freely available to you:

  • If you can relieve my concern through discussing it here, I can stop worrying about it.
  • If the two of us can't agree here, we can ask for help through Wikipedia's dispute resolution process, such as asking for a "third opinion", or requesting comments from other Wikipedians. Admins usually abide by agreements reached through this process.
  • If you decide to just go ahead and change your username, it is possible for you to keep your present contributions history under the new username: simply request a new name here following the guidelines on that page, rather than creating a whole new account.

Let me reassure you that my writing here means I don't think your username is grossly, blatantly, or obviously inappropriate; such names get reported straight to Wikipedia:Administrator_intervention_against_vandalism (WP:AIV), or blocked on sight. This is more a case where opinions might differ, and it would be good to reach some consensus — either here or at WP:RFC/NAME. So I look forward to a friendly discussion, and to enjoying your continued participation on Wikipedia. Thank you again! -- Pak21 10:45, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Hello, Pak21. I chose my username because that is quite simply my name. The name Farrell is quite common in Lancashire - many Irish people came in through Liverpool during the potato famine and fanned out from there. The sportsman who shares my name causes me a minor amount of nuisance, but I try to be philosphical that sportsmen tend to have a short time in the spotlight before fading from view.
As a relatively new user, I'm still learning. I've now taken the time to learn about user pages, and have created one which includes an attempt at disambiguation. Have a look and tell me whether you think that goes some way towards easing the potential confusion. I would like to continue to use my own name - a celebrity coming along and usurping your name is rather annoying and I don't want to allow it to impact my life, as I'm sure you wouldn't - so I would prefer to try disambiguation options. Look forward to your advice.

[edit] Clive Sinclair

Is there another Mensa biography of Clive Sinclair out there? Seems a shame to not have his Chairmanship on this page at all.

Hi Julie. British Mensa revamped their website, and as part of that change they appear to have removed the biogs, including Clive's. I'll ask the press officer if it could be reinstated somewhere... Andy Farrell 09:56, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
I never heard back, but I've just found where they reinstated it. Have put it in the Clive Sinclair article. Andy Farrell 21:01, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
