James Nicholas Payne is an American writer. He is noted by family, close friends and primarily teachers for his aplaudable prowess for creative writing, his ability to relate to, understand and personify music (mainly classic rock and soul music), his unique sense of fashion, (sometimes) varying mood episodes, his coordinational awkwardness, his mental maturity, his emotional immaturity, his rarely-found high level of relationship seriousness and his seemingly out-of-this-world abilities to quickly catch on to things and understand social patterns and methods (not always positive ones). He is 15 and lives in Florence, Oregon.
[edit] Knack for writing
Since around the seventh grade, Payne has basically been told that he has a writing ability that easily rivals all competition. Soon afterwards, this led him to believe that he was placed on this world not only to become a famous writer, but as he would put it, he would use his powers for good and not evil. He also had a "far-out" goal of improving the world through his writing (this mainly includes society and the environment), something very few writers before him have done, or even thought of. So, if these two goals were combined, there would be potentially immeasurable possibilities.
Payne has been working on a supposedly epic masterpiece since December, 2005 (although he has mentioned that he will be working more on it (and he hopes to and believes he can finish it)) during 2008. His current title for it is an aptly thought of No Payne, No Gain. Although he wishes that most of it remains confidential until it gets published and released, his short, yet complex introduction states as follows:
"Hello, world. My name is James Payne and I'm about to take you on the adventure of a lifetime. I may be the storyteller, but I'm also the protaganist. During this journey, you will all see what hatred, happiness, fear, comedy, sadness, magic and most importantly, love really are. We will go from being spirits above the trees, to a ghastly motorcycle wreck in Hawaii, to being immensely cursed by a burgundy moon and much, much, much more! When you get right down to it, you could call this the modern day Romeo & Juliet. Are you up to the epic adventure of "No Payne, No Gain"? If so, keep on reading..."
Payne has also reputed that there will be a cross between computerized and real life, a polar bear maul, aliens coming to Earth with giant burritos, darkly and intensely stated religious and worldly views and a world expedition of ten lifetimes. He has also stated that music will play a big role in his story.
Personally, Payne himself believes that a pinnacle in his writing had flourished when he had truly fallen in love for the first time (reputedly over a girl he barely knew) with a poem entitled "She Is" that he had first written on September 4, 2006:
She is... She is the flowers that peak and blossom... She is the wild grass that sways gracefully in the breath of the breeze... She is the lakes, the rivers that snake through the laughing forests... She is the tallest mountain that shall never crumble... She is the horizon that I reach for in my dreams... She is a gentle breeze that leads you to a land of enchanted dreams and everlasting freedom... She is the stars that brighten the night... She is everything good and mighty... She is the soul that lives deep beneath my very core... She is...
The girl of which he is speaking of remains unknown to many people, but most fellow students are positive of who it is.
[edit] Liking for music
Payne is well known by non-strangers to be infactuated with music. He states:
Music is a breath of fresh air... a natural rejuvenator. But for me, it goes much further than that. Some personal reasons, but two of the main reasons I like it so much are because it strangely reminds me mainly of my future plans and the gorgeous places I want to travel to...
Being obsessed with list making, he finally came up with a list of his ten favorite songs:
- Tuesday Afternoon - The Moody Blues
- I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home) - Grand Funk Railroad
- Lay Lady Lay - Bob Dylan
- Maggot Brain - Funkadelic
- 1983 (A Merman I Should Turn to Be) - Jimi Hendrix
- Daydream - The Lovin' Spoonful
- Ten Years Gone - Led Zeppelin
- Sunshine Superman - Donovan
- Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
- Bold As Love - Jimi Hendrix
He also plans to create a band with a few of his friends. While he personally enjoys the powerful and emotional sound of the heavy-overdriven electric guitar, he also wants to learn a classical style of guitar playing as well, for as he puts it: "It gives off a more natural effect." He claims that fusion is the most listenable form of drumming (a jazz style pioneered by artists such as Ian Paice and Mitch Mitchell), and therefore would like that to be the backing sound of the band. He would also enjoy electric bass and keyboards being included as well.
[edit] Personal Life
Payne requires individual attention for a lot of his school-life. He has four discovered mental conditions: Asperger's Syndrome, Bipolar Disorder, Seasonal Affective Disorder and Attention Deficit Disorder. While some of these conditions seem to play a big role in his passionate and raw writing ability, they do get in his way a lot. A few examples of this are impaired motor skills, episodic behavior and a wandering mind.
His religious views are very complex and independent. He classifies himself as either and agnostic or a deist. He says that "either one is possible, but agnosticism is currently the most logical way to go. Although deism is always a choice when you are having a religious conversation with a group of people... it's more of a certain thing, rather than an uncertain thing, but hell, we can never be completely certain now, can we?"
