[edit] Who I Am
I am Andrew Tutt a BME major in the class of 2009 at Duke University. You can email me at tutt.andrew@gmail.com. I have Adminstrative and Bureaucratic privileges on the Duke University Wiki at http://www.duiki.com which I am more than happy to share with anyone who feels they'd like to put in a few minutes here and there each week.
[edit] About Me
Well, I do many things on campus, having been blessed with a remarkable breadth of interests and lack of social skills.
Let's see, I graduated from Davis Senior High School in 2005. I currently plan a Biomedical Engineering & Economics double-major (With a double-secret Math major attached).
In addition to working with Duke University Improv, I started Wired 2 Achieve, a computer refurbishment initiative which has collected hundreds of computers donated them to organizations ranging from Read Seed in Durham to a group of students headed for Ecuador to build a computer lab. I also created the Duke Journal of Public Affairs, a journal of undergraduate scholarship in the social sciences, which released its first issue in April 2006 and is still going strong. I also sparked interest in a Duke Conversations Society, and thanks to the remarkable work of the people who helped refine the idea, we have had several incredible events over the past year.
I once undertook independent study research of the NPR1 protein pathway in Arabidopsis in the lab of Dr. Xinnian Dong, and continued that research as a recipient of the Howard Hughes Research fellowship in the summer of 2005. I used to coordinate all the physics demonstrations for the Techtronics program, putting on something like 40 in my freshman year, though now I am a full-fledged fellow (yay.). I also serve as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Young Investigators (and still do to this day).
In my spare time, I work in the Library behind the Circulation Desk, and now enjoy the benefits of working as a Supervisor there, which means I get a key and can read whenever I want. (double yay.) I enjoy web design, and developed the the Innoworks website, as well as that of Duke University Improv (and quite a few others). I still (2006) really want to earn a D. Phil (problably in English) from Oxford after graduation, so that I might root my political leanings in deeper philosophies, but the path to get there may be longer than I once thought.
[edit] Books read in the summer of '05
If you've read any of these, I'd love to hear what you thought...
- Beloved
- American Pastoral
- Confederacy of Dunces
- Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West (great book.)
- Letters to a Young Contrarian
- Smart Moves for Liberal Arts Grads (lol)
[edit] Sophomore Year
Sophomore year at Duke was marked by a few notable endeavors, mostly continuing and strengthening projects from Freshman year. I did however run for DSG President which is always an interesting story.
In May of 2007 I spoke at an event that brought Duke closer to home for many alumni called "A Duke Conversation" along with Seyward Darby, President Brodhead and Erwin Chemerinsky. We had a lot of fun.
[edit] Goals for Duiki
Anyway, I have only a couple goals, which people can feel free to comment on and disagree with.
- Make Duiki Unique - Here, it's pretty simple. If you can already find the info easily somewhere else, why use Duiki at all? If it's especially useful, hard to find, or well known, I think it belongs, and especially if its personal, insightful or not often shared through official sources ;)
- Make Duiki Worthwhile - This is the only other goal, and it's pretty obvious. I don't even care if we make it successfully or often visited. If it's worthwhile, it's worth it.
[edit] Short-Term Focus
I will be focusing most of my energies on backend issues, like implementation, etc. I will try to avoid doing too much administering if I can. My principle focus will be on the front page, particularly in emulating and improving the Dukepass Website.
- So my short term focus has expanded to making Duiki more functional if you are not here to use it as an encyclopedic reference, but instead as, say, a homepage. The <rss> tags are WONDERFUL. --DuikiSysop 11:25, 19 July 2006 (MDT)
- So, I have actually turned now toward making the frontpage MORE like a reference/guide, which I think is a more reasonable expectation of our niche.
[edit] Photo Pages
These are pages of photos I have taken for the wiki.
