[edit] Childhood
Andrew Hackner was born January 14th, 1986, in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Andrew Hackner is the son of Margaret and two-time world curling champion Al "The Iceman" Hackner. Through childhood Andrew has brought into the curling world but found that his heart lied in other places. Andrew played numerous other sports such as Hockey, and Baseball. Andrew has a brother, Graham Hackner, who was born September 16th, 1987. Andrew attended Drew Street Public School, then moved to McKellar Park school when Drew was shut down. Andrew played on the local "AAA" baseball team names North West Slam and travelled across Canada, and the upper United States. Andrew spent his summers at his cottage at Sandy Beach, a place he was very fond of.

Andrew chose Sir Winston Churchill High School as a perfect place to continue to grow as an athlete due to SWC being known for athletics. Unfortunately High School sports were cancelled that year and Andrew transfered to Fort William Collegiate Institute for the remainder of his High School career. At FWCI Andrew grew and matured into a great young man and accumulated numerous athletic awards in such fields as Badminton, Volleyball, Football, Basketball, Track and Field, and Soccer. Andrew is famously known for his amazing performance in football in the 2005 matchup of FWCI and Westgate where he intercepted the quaterback four times. Andrew was named to numerous all-star teams such as football, volleyball, and basketball. In midst of grade 10, Andrew's parents forced him to quit the Northen Ontario Under 18 basketball team because of baseball. Although Andrew was a very prominent baseball player, his heart lied with basketball. By grade 12 Andrew quit baseball and focused on basketball. At the end of Andrew's high school career he had plans of playing university basketball. Andrew trained all summer for the August Lakehead University Thunderwolves training camp.

Andrew's hard work did not go unnoticed as he was selected as a member of the Men's Varsity Basketball team in 2005. Andrew red-shirted the 2005-2006 season and worked on improving for the years to come. Andrew made two appearances in Halifax in the annual Ron Shovler Dalhousie Tournament. Andrew's hardwork during the season paid off as he was awarded the Roookie of the Year award for 2005-2006. Andrew is currently a geology student, is still playing for the men's basketball team and has a small wood.
