André Maréchal

Robert Gaston André Maréchal (b. 1916) is a French researcher and administrator in optics.
Maréchal graduated from the École normale supérieure in 1941, and received his engineer's degree from SupOptique (École supérieure d'optique) in 1943. He became director of Research in the French ministry of Education, and then general director of the Institut d'optique théorique et appliquée and SupOptique from 1968 to 1983. He is currently an emeritus professor at the Université Paris-Sud.
Maréchal served as president of the International Commission for Optics (1962-1966), honorary vice president of the Comité français de physique, and was a founding member of the Franco-Finnish Association for Scientific and Technical Research. He has been a member of the French Academy of Sciences since 1981, and of the French Academy of Technologies.
