[edit] Biography
Butzer was born in Stuttgart, Germany and lives in Rangsdorf by Berlin. He makes semi-abstract paintings that feature cartoon-like characters and objects.[1] Butzer is interested in the comic genre, whose ambivalence comes on the one hand from a childlike inflation of effect and on the other hand from an artificial lifelessness, set beyond morality. [Thomas Groetz: Painting and Good Health, Exhibition Catalog, Berlin, 2003, p. 7] Butzer’s work has been called Science-Fiction-Expressionism,[2] he is influenced by James Ensor, Willem DeKooning and Phillip Guston.[3] In 1997 he helped to found Akademie Isotrop in Hamburg.[4]
