Ander Monson is an American novelist and poet.
He was raised in Houghton, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula and received his Bachelor of Arts from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois.[1].
He went on to earn a MA from Iowa State University and a MFA from the University of Alabama.
Monson's first two books, the novel Other Electricities and the poetry collection Vacationland, were published in 2005. Other Electricities was praised widely for its innovative approach, lyric intensity, and grim humor.[2] It was awarded the John C. Zacharis prize from the literary journal Ploughshares, and it was a finalist for the New York Public Library's Young Lions Award in 2006. His nonfiction debut, Neck Deep and Other Predicaments: Essays was published in February 2007. It was the second winner of the Graywolf Press Nonfiction Prize, and critically acclaimed for its imaginative reworkings[3] of the form of the essay. Monson received a Christopher Isherwood Foundation fellowship in 2007, a Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award (for Neck Deep and Other Predicaments) in 2008, and the Knox College Junior Alumni Achievement Award, also in 2008.
Monson is the editor of the literary magazine DIAGRAM and the New Michigan Press. He lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and teaches at Grand Valley State University.
